Annapurna Jayanti is a festival devoted to Goddess Annapurna, the Hindu Goddess of food and cooking. The word ‘Anna’ in Hindi signifies ‘food’ whereas ‘Purna’ implies ‘completeness’. It is believed when the earth fell short of food and people face famine is when they along with Brahma and Vishnu worshipped Lord Shiva. It is when Goddess Parvati appeared in the form of Goddess Annapurna in the Hindu month of Margashirsha and filled the earth with the abundance of food. Since then, this day has been celebrated as Annapurna Jayanti.
