Mangla Gauri Vrat is dedicated to Maa Gauri. Ladies in India undertake the ritual, fast and offer prayers every Tuesday during the Shravan Maas that extends from July through to August.
It is believed that observing this ritual brings immense benefits and helps get blessings of Maa Gauri on the devotees.
It is generally performed with even more piousness by newly married women and through it, they seek a long, prosperous and happy married life.
On the day of the puja, the idol of the goddess is placed on a small wooden platform wrapped in a red cloth. Sixteen lamps made from wheat flour consisting of 16 thick cotton wicks are lit with ghee.
The number “16” is important and numerous offerings (as mentioned below) are made to the goddess with which is a factor of 16.
Offerings made to the goddess include but are not limited to:
Sixteen garlands, sixteen laddus, sixteen different types of fruits, sixteen betel leaves, sixteen betel nuts and sixteen bangles and a saree. Five types of dry fruits, seven types of cereals, jeera, coriander, cloves and cardamoms are to be offered sixteen times each.
